About Runway

Runway Creative combines generative media models with editing tools, a conversational Agent and node-based Workflows. Describe a shot, supply reference media, or change an existing clip’s lighting, background and objects. Runway Dev provides a separate API for developers.

Main features

  • Generate video and images with Runway and partner models.
  • Edit footage with Aleph and Edit Studio.
  • Develop videos through conversations with Runway Agent.
  • Connect generation steps in reusable Workflows.
  • Integrate media generation through the separately billed API.

Capabilities in practice

Build and revise a video in one conversation

Agent includes a timeline where you can assemble clips, align them with music and revise a sequence. You can also edit the timeline manually. Sessions inside Projects can access the project’s assets and Brand Kits, avoiding repeated uploads of shared references.

Build a reusable production sequence

Describe a production process and Agent can assemble its nodes and inputs into a Workflow. You can inspect and edit the resulting sequence. Through MCP, an agent can read existing Brand Kits as references; creating or changing those kits still takes place in Runway.

Platforms and access

Cloud web app, iOS and Android; plugins support Premiere Pro, After Effects and DaVinci Resolve.

Pricing and plans

Standard, Pro and Max cost USD 15, 35 and 95/month with monthly billing. Annual billing costs USD 144, 336 and 912/year, equivalent to USD 12, 28 and 76/month. Monthly allowances are 625, 2,250 and 9,500 credits. Additional credits and API usage cost extra; applicable taxes are charged when required.

Open source and deployment

The creative platform is a hosted service. Runway Dev provides Node.js/TypeScript and Python SDKs.

Data and privacy

General service terms permit inputs and outputs to be used to train and improve Runway’s models. User content may be processed by service providers, and users have deletion rights. Enterprise and API products may follow separate agreements with different data-use conditions.

Frequently asked questions

What does the free plan include?

125 one-time credits and 5 GB of storage, with a selection of models.

Is USD 12 the monthly subscription price?

USD 12 is the annual-billing monthly equivalent. Standard costs USD 15/month with monthly billing or USD 144/year with annual billing.

Do unused credits carry over?

Standard and Pro monthly credits do not. Max allows up to one month; purchased credits do not expire.

Is API usage included in my creative subscription?

Runway Dev is a separate developer platform with its own pricing and billing.

Can Runway use uploads for training?

General service terms permit inputs and outputs to be used for training. Enterprise and API products may have different data-use conditions in their separate agreements.

Working style

What it helps you produce

Develop storyboards, animatics and visual effects. Explore advertising concepts and product shots. Generate or transform footage for an edit.

Who it is for

Video creators and visual effects artists. Marketing teams. Developers building media features. Prepare an account, authorized source material and a person to review and finish the output.

Where it runs

Cloud web app, iOS and Android; plugins support Premiere Pro, After Effects and DaVinci Resolve. The creative platform is a hosted service. Runway Dev provides Node.js/TypeScript and Python SDKs.

Tasks and preparation

Start and refine

Create an account and open the Runway workspace. Choose a tool or Agent, add a prompt and any reference media. Review model, duration, resolution and credit cost, then generate and export.

Understand generation errors and credit use

A generation error can return credits. A completed clip that misses the desired look still consumes credits. Check the generation state and credit-usage log before retrying, and refine the prompt or source material for the next attempt.

A brand video assembled from project assets — example

Keep product images, logos and references in a project with a Brand Kit. Use Agent to arrange clips and music on the timeline, then review the cuts and export the approved result.

A reusable production workflow — example

Describe the stages of a media job so Agent can connect the workflow nodes and inputs. Inspect and modify the nodes before using the workflow with the next set of source material.

Generated media in your application — example

Submit an API generation task, monitor its state and wait for completion. Download the returned files into your own storage, then serve those stored assets to your users.

Conditions to check

Credits are consumed at different rates by model, duration and resolution. Free includes 125 one-time credits, rather than a monthly allowance. Standard and Pro credits reset monthly; Max can roll over up to one month.

Files and results

Reuse a project setup

Brand Kits, project assets, the Agent timeline and editable node workflows help you reuse a visual direction and adjust how a project is produced.

Subscriptions and billing

Credit renewal and carryover

Standard and Pro plan credits reset each billing month. Max can carry up to one month of unused credits into the next month. Separately purchased credits do not expire, and a workspace uses a shared balance. Creative credits and API credits are separate.

Cancel or request a refund

Cancel to stop renewal while retaining paid features through the current cycle. Assets stay in the account. Refund requests can cover an unused or nearly unused subscription bought or renewed within 30 days, subject to review; app-store purchases follow that store’s process.

Apps, integrations and development

Generate through the API

The public API supports asynchronous tasks with official Python and Node.js SDKs. Limits are set per project and model/modality; excess concurrency queues tasks as THROTTLED. Save returned output files to your storage because their URLs expire within 24–48 hours.

Developer MCP and generation MCP

Runway Dev MCP at dev.runwayml.com/mcp connects a coding assistant to tasks, model routers and documentation. Authenticate through browser OAuth; keep API keys in the Developer Portal. The media-generation MCP at mcp.runwayml.com is a separate connection.

Handle retries deliberately

Retry HTTP 429, 502, 503 and 504 with exponential backoff and jitter. Fix invalid input or credentials for 400 and 401 instead of repeatedly submitting the same request. The official SDKs handle retry logic automatically.

Ownership and deployment

Using generated assets

Runway does not claim ownership of your inputs or outputs and allows commercial use of outputs under its agreement. General Creative-service terms also permit inputs and outputs to be used for model improvement and training; an enterprise or API agreement must be considered separately.

Rights in source material

Use images, voices and other source material you have permission to use. General commercial-use terms do not grant rights to third-party images, voices or trademarks.

Export, migration and alternatives

Portability lock inExported media can be edited elsewhere. API result links are temporary, so save files to your own storage promptly. Projects, Brand Kits and Agent workflows remain in the Runway account.
